Border Beat: Contentious Covid-curbing decision stopped in its tracks

Mozambique’s southernmost border with South Africa, Ponto do Ouro, has been closed because of the same issue that has affected South Africa’s land border with neighbours elsewhere – no health officials to oversee Covid-19 health screening.

It’s not clear whether it’s on the South African or Mozambican side of the quiet crossing north of Kosi Bay.

Because operations have been suspended, travellers and traffic are advised to use alternate points of entry between the two countries.

The BBC has reported that Mozambique’s health authorities have been placed on high alert because of the rampant spread of the Delta variant of the virus in South Africa.
